Chevron Hosts Capacity Building Workshop for Journalists in Lagos

Chevron Nigeria Limited recently conducted a one-day training program for thirty journalists from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council at the Airport Hotel Ikeja.

The theme of the training was “Driving Nigeria’s Business & Economy: The Media Perspective”.

Adeleye Ajayi, the Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, commended Chevron Nigeria for sponsoring the training, which aimed to broaden the journalists’ understanding of the nation’s business and economy during a time of significant economic changes.

Mr. Esimaje Brikinn, the General Manager of Policy, Government and Public Affairs at Chevron Nigeria Limited, emphasized the importance of developing human capital and acknowledged the crucial role of journalists as agenda-setters and opinion leaders.

Chevron has been involved in various capacity-building endeavours aimed at enhancing the skills and abilities of media practitioners.

These initiatives include the sponsorship of the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills (AWARES) program in collaboration with the Pan Atlantic University, Lagos, benefiting over 120 journalists since 2014.

Chevron is also planning additional capacity-building programs in Lagos, Asaba, and Abuja in the near future.

The training covered topics such as Tapping the Potential of the Oil & Gas Sector of the Nigerian Economy, Maximising the Gains of Nigeria’s Blue Economy, Nigeria’s Economy through Money & Capital Markets, and Nigeria’s Realistic Budget.

Additionally, Dr Ademola Irinyemi, a maritime expert, highlighted untapped opportunities in Nigeria’s blue economy, emphasizing the potential for job creation, improved food security, tourism, infrastructure development, green energy, smart cities, and ports.
