A Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has heard testimony from John Adetola, an Executive Assistant to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, regarding a $400,000 handover.
Adetola, the 7th prosecution witness, explained to Justice Rahman Oshodi that he was summoned from Ekiti in 2018 to collect the money from John Ayo and deliver it to Emefiele.
He described visiting Ayo’s Lekki residence, receiving an envelope, and subsequently handing it to Emefiele in the office.
He detailed his role at the CBN since June 2014 and previous employment at Veritas Registrars.
During questioning, he mentioned his communication methods with Emefiele and identified some of Emefiele’s family members.
Adetola also recounted his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in February 2023, where he provided a voluntary statement.
He confirmed interactions with John Ayo, who was the former Director of ICT.
Documents printed from his phone were presented in court, which the prosecution sought to tender.
The defence objected on grounds of admissibility, arguing they were only for identification, but Justice Oshodi admitted them for that purpose and adjourned the case until December 10.
