Chrisland School Limited, Others Dock Over Alleged Involuntary Manslaughter of Adeniran Whitney

The Lagos State government has arraigned Chrisland School Limited, and some of its staff over the death of Adeniran Omodesola Whitney who died during the school inter house sport before the state High Court sitting in Ikeja.

The affected staff are the school principal, Belinda Amao, Ademoye Adewale, Kuku Fatai, and Nwatu Victoria.

According to the charge information prepared by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Jide Martins, on February 9, 2023 at about 1pm, in Agege Sports Stadium, Agege, Lagos in the Ikeja Judicial Division killed one Adeniran Omodesola Whitney by acting in a reckless and negligent manner that endangered her life.

Arraigning the defendants, the Attorney General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, informed the court that the state had filed two count charges against the defendants, urging the court to take their plea.

The defendants however pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.

Subsequently, the Attorney General informed the court that the state has seventeen witnesses, as such will be praying for a date to open trial.

The oral application was not opposed by all the defendants’ counsel.

While in the dock, the school’s principal, Mrs. Belinda Amao, broke down in tears as the court and counsel tried to agree on a date for the commencement of the trial.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala, who presided over the matter, thereafter fixed May 25, June 1, 8, and 15 for commencement of trial.

Ruling on the bail application, the judge admitted the first and second defendants to N10 million bail each with two sureties each in like sum.

She also admitted the third and the fourth defendants to N20 million bail each with two sureties each in like sum.

The judge said all the sureties must be gainfully employed, have credible and verified evidence of financial status and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

“All the sureties must have two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must submit their international passports with th Chief registrar of the state high court,” Ogala said.

The court, however ordered the defence counsel to write an undertaken in order for the defendants to be released to them before the perfection of their bail.
