The Nigerian Senate has resolved to probe the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Ibrahim Tanko over corruption allegations levelled against him by Justices of the Apex court.
According to the Senate, his resignation won’t stop its probe of corruption allegations.
His resignation comes amidst displeasure by justices and other stakeholders at the apex over the deteriorating conditions of the court.
The Justices of the apex court, in a joint petition, accused the Bauchi State-born CJN of poor welfare, among other ill-treatment being meted out to them. This is an unprecedented development in Nigeria’s judicial history.
In the leaked petition, the 14 justices accused the CJN of abandoning his responsibilities and diverting funds meant for the running of the Supreme Court.
The resolution of the Red Chamber followed a motion by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.
Senator Bamidele’s motion was titled: “Matter of urgent public importance on the state of affairs in the Supreme Court of Nigeria and demand by Justices of the court, pursuant to rules 41 and 51 of the Senate Standing Orders, 2022 (as amended).”
