Balancing Faith and Technology: Nigeria Religious Coalition Cautions on the Application of AI Systems

Religious leaders in Nigeria have called for more engagement in shaping the ethical development of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that unchecked advancements could undermine human dignity and faith.

At a news conference organized by the Nigeria Religious Coalition on AI, Rt. Rev. S. Oluwole Onaleke, Bishop of the Diocese of Agodi, urged faith communities to participate actively in AI discussions.

The event, held in Ibadan, gathered representatives from various religious and ethical organizations.

Onaleke emphasized the need to align technological advancements with ethical and spiritual principles.

He expressed concerns about AI’s unpredictable nature, warning that it could lead to disempowerment in sectors like business and healthcare.

He highlighted that while AI can enhance efficiency, it raises serious moral and theological questions, such as the implications of machines mimicking human intelligence.

The bishop questioned whether AI with human-like reasoning could share in the sacred identity of humanity, posing a challenge to the concept of Imago Dei—the belief that humans are created in God’s image.

Onaleke cautioned against allowing AI to become an object of worship, reminding attendees that faith traditions warn against trusting anything but God.

He stressed the importance of embedding ethical principles into AI development to avoid disastrous consequences.

As Nigeria plays a central role in religious matters, Onaleke called for advocacy for policies that ensure AI serves society’s best interests while respecting religious traditions.

The conference concluded with demands to harness AI for beneficial applications, particularly in agriculture, education, and healthcare, while being cautious about its application in religious practices.

“Artificial intelligence can be a tool for human flourishing if guided by wisdom and faith,” Onaleke summarized, warning that unchecked AI could challenge the essence of humanity.
